I never seen the original movie The Thing From Another World, released in 1951. But if you ask most horror fans, John Carpenters version from 1982, is better than the original. I have seen John Carpenter´s The Thing several times, and its a timeless classic. One of his best movies of all time i would personally say. So when i heard a prequel was on its way, i cant say i was thrilled. Maybe because prequels are very hard to do, and it should also pay respect to the older version. So will The Thing still make me applaude infront of the screen? Lets find out.
1982, Antarctica. A Norwegian science team with Dr Sander Halvorson ( Ulrich Tomsen ) recruites paleontologist Kate Lloyd ( Mary Elisabeth Winstead ), since they have found an extraterrestrial spaceship buried deep within the ice of Antarctica. A creature is found frozen that they belived died in the crash over 100.000 years ago. But as the science team starts to look for answers, on what this creature is, something goes terribly wrong.
Lets start by saying, its not better than John Carpenters version. No suprise there, but is it still entertaining? For beeing a prequal, then yes. Especially since alot of the characters are real norwegian people, so you get to hear norwegian language at some points. And that stays true to the Carpenter´s version, since its supposed to tell what happened before the american expedition lands on the norwegian expedition. Another good thing is that director Matthijs Van Hejningen, Jr, have managed to capture the amazing antarctic scenery, wich makes the expedition more vulnerable, theres no easy way out. So, when every piece is put together, we get a slasher served with some fun moments. I dont think no one can beat John Carpenter´s version, but this prequal isnt to bad at all. Sometimes its just nice to see flesh torn bodies fly off, and you are left with a smile on your face.
