Black Creek
During the early 90s i watched a lot of martial arts action movies at my local VHS rental store Videomix. It didn't matter if it was Jean-Claude Van Damme, Brandon Lee, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan or other action stars such as Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Billy Blanks, Jet Li, as long as I got to see lots of kicks and gun battles i was pleased. Who cared about the plot of each film? It was the action scenes that really mattered where the fighting scenes made the biggest impact. Martial arts action movies during this period of the 90s was very popular on VHS. If we were lucky you would get to see at least 6 different new martial arts movies coming out in one single month, where most of them were low budget martial art films from Cannon Group, PM Entertainment or at some occasions a bigger studio like Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer would finance the film such as Death Warrant with Jean-Claude Van Damme. During the 90´s i bought VHS movies from England and one of the films i remember buying was the 1992 martial arts action film Rage And Honor. Directed by Terence H. Winkelness ( director of the 1987 classic boddy horror film The Nest ), this was my first introduction to martial arts action star Cyntha Rothrock. I had seen her name before on VHS covers but i was not familiar with her work. She turned out to be really cool as she does her own fighting scenes. She is not the lead actor of this film, that is martial art action star Richard Norton as the character Preston. Either way i just remember enjoying this film for being a pretty traditional cop action film. One advice, see the funny performance by actor Stephen Davies as the homeless Baby. He is completely hyped up and talks constantly. I did see some other films with Cynthia on VHS such as China O´Brien, Tiger Claws and Lady Dragon. Cynthia Rothrock never stopped making films and not that long ago she released her film Black Creek, that she was able to make thanks to fans of martial arts cinema through an Indiegogo campaign. You can still get a physical copy of this film on this page, if you would like to show your support. I got myself a physical copy to review this film and being a fan of martial art films in general. Is the western film Black Creek a must watch or is this unfortunately not as good as we were hoping it would be?
Rose Jennings ( Cynthia Rothrock ) return to her brother´s home where she finds out he have been brutally killed by the evil leader Damien Sinclair ( Richard Norton ) running a gang of outlaws. In the town of Black Creek it becomes clear that they don´t like Rose visiting, she is too nosy on what Damien and his men are doing across town. She swear to revenge her brother´s death as she gets help from her new friend Xiyang ( Don "The Dragon" Wilson ).
Ever since the idea of Black Creek came out on social media i was looking forward to this film. Seeing several martial arts action stars united together in a western action film did look good on paper. So, does this film manage to pull this concept through? For the most part i would say yes, i have some smaller issues with Black Creek but let´s get into the good. Actress Cynthia Rothrock knows exactly how to deliver martial arts entertainment, even if shes over 60 years old she can still punch and kick ass, i wouldn´t mess with her in a desert bar. Cynthia deliver a solid performance as her character Rose and i like the fact that she does not try and make her character too rough. There is a good side within Rose and you get a sense of that. I also like the cotume design on Rose, it seems that they knew exactly what clothes she could use to do her martial arts scenes and still keep the western influences look authentic. Now, there are especially two other characters in this film that definetely deserve to be talked about so let´s begin with the character Damien ( played by legendary martia arts actor Richard Norton ). Damien is the perfect evil leader of a film such as this and Richard Norton really prove himself that he knows how to potrait this character. The next character i have to mention is the character known as Xiyan ( played by legendary martial arts champion, and actor Don "The Dragon" Wilson ). This could perhaps be the best acting performance i have ever seen from Don Wilson, he should really do more western films in the future. His scenes with Cynthia Rothrock are the best acting scenes in this entire film, they have a very special screen presence together. The fighting scenes in general look as good as i was hoping for, they are well made and you can tell they don't cut down on the violence. The negative note on this film is the length, there are some very long dialogue scenes and they are not terrible, they just go on a little bit too long. Otherwise i think this is a good looking western film and the combination of martial arts match well with the story. To see legendary martial arts actor Richard Norton in a final fighting scene together with Cynthia before he passed away is beautiful, and Black Creek becomes a tribute to both martial arts and the western genre. Directors Shannon Lanier and Mike Möller have made one of the better martial art films this year, you should definetely check out Black Creek this upcoming Christmas.

The Ritual
All over the world in different time periods of history you can find many well known cases of exorcism. There are people who believe a demon can take over the body of a human and control you or an evil spirit who intend to harm you. No matter what you believe in or if you believe in exorcism at all, i find it fascinating reading about classics cases of documented exorcisms that according to witnesses actually happened. Over the years i have read about some cases that happened in the past and i especially remember a couple of exorcism cases. Let´s bring one of these cases up in here and i choose to talk about the exorcism case of Michael Taylor in 1974. This took place in October in the small village of Ossett in Yorkshire County, England. It is said that Michael Taylor was possessed by at least 40 demons as the exorcism took place during October 5 - 6 at St. Thomas Church in Gawber. The exorcism was headed by Vincent, the Angelican priest of St. Thomas, and was aided by a Methodist clergyman, the Rev. Raymond Smith. As the exorcism finally ended they believed they managed to remove all 40 demons. But as they allowed Michael to go home, they had a feeling that something didn´t feel right, as if at least 3 demons--insanity, murder and violence--were still left in him. While Michael returned home, he brutally murdered his wife Christine. He attacked her with his bare hands, tearing her eyes and tounge out and almost tearing her face off, then strangling their poodle. He was found by a policeman, naked in the street, covered in blood. At his trial in March, Michael was acquitted on the grounds of insanity. He was sent to Broadmoor Hospital for two years, then spent another two years in a secure ward in Bradford before being released. Since we usually don´t hear a lot about exorcism cases in England i feel that this case is fascinating. They actually mention the case of Michael Taylor in the 2021 horror film The Conjuring - The Devil Made Me Do It from director Michael Chaves, even though this film is based on another exorcism case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson that took place in 1981. A good film by the way, not as powerful as the previous The Conjuring films but still worth a watch. Speaking of exorcism films i have been curious to see the exorcist horror film The Ritual since this summer from director David Midell ( who directed the critically acclaimed 2019 drama thriller The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain ). I was especially curious about seeing legendary actor Al Pacino as an exorcist priest. Is this a solid horror film in general or should you watch the 2005 horror film The Exorcism Of Emily Rose instead?
In 1928, in the quiet farming town of Earling, Iowa, a young woman named Emma Schmidt ( Abigail Cowen ) begins to suffer from terrifying and inexplicable supernatural phenomena. She is tormented by night terrors, violent outbursts, speaking in languages she doesn´t know, and an unnatural hatred towards anything sacred. Her family, devout Catholic Christians, believes she is possessed and seek help from the Church. Their desperate plea reaches Father Theophilus Risesinger ( Al Pacino ), a seasoned priest of the Capuchin religious order known for conducting exorcisms. Riseinger travels to Iowa with a reluctant companion, Father Joseph Steiger ( Dan Stevens ). Steiger is skeptical of demonic possession but promise Riseinger to help him during his exorcism sessions.
One detail that i really appreciate especially in horror films is if the film is shot on a professional level, where you can tell that the director made an effort to make the horror scenes effective. If you know how to film a horror film and make an impact on the audience, that alone can help the film work well with some other ingredients included. In the case of The Ritual there is especially one big problem with this horror film and that is how director David Midell decided to make this film. He moves the camera around a lot, in every scene basically. No focused shots that we usually see in quality horror films, it´s like he´s walking around with the camera as if this could be a found footage horror film but it´s not. This is a very traditional excorcist horror film and i would probably have viewed this film differently if this was supposed to be a found footage horror film. This is also another problem with The Ritual that this is a very basic exorcism film. If you compared this film with others within this specific genre there is not much that stands out. Even the exorcism scenes ( for the most part ) don´t really add much to make this film interesting. And to be honest i have to say actor Al Pacino as the exorcist priest Theophilus is actually a pretty weak performance from such a legendary actor. I can mention at least 10 films where i would recommend his performances and The Ritual is nowhere near on that list. I will say that Stranger Things actress Abigail Cowen as the possessed young girl Emma is one of the few highlights of this film. At least you can sense that she tried to make an effort into making her character feel like she is possessed. Of course you also have actor Dan Stevens ( who i really enjoyed in the gothic horror Netflix film Apostle, worth checking out if you have not seen it ) as the character Father Jospeh. Hes not horrible like Pacino but i would have liked some more steady balls from his character, he is a bit too soft. The Ritual is not the worst exorcism film i have seen and i have seen a lot of them, ( one of the worst is definetely the 2020 exorcism film The Last Exorcist ), but overall i can´t really find much positive to say regarding this film. Director David Midell tries to tell a traditional exorcism film but doesn´t have an interesting story to tell. I swear once you read my review of The Ritual you have already forgotten about this film, it is a film that will most likely dust on DVD shelves.

River Of Blood
If there is one very controversial subject it is the very disturbing name known as cannibalism. Eating another life form as food is something that happens every day in the animal kingdom worldwide. In most cases it´s about survival and the need to feed of fresh meat. But then we also have human cannibalism that is also well documented through history, both in ancient and recent times. The idea of another human being eating another human may sound impossible, but in some cases that have been the only way to survive. Some of you might remember the horrific case of the 1972 accident Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, the plane that crashed up in the Andes mountains in Argentina on October 13. The remaining survivors were all dealing with very serious weather conditions and health problems, and no big food supplies on the crashed plane which meant they had to find a solution to find other food sources. They had no other options but to eat dead people, just to be able to survive. A very disturbing story but what were they supposed to do to be able to go on? I especially digged into this case when in the year 1993 they made a Hollywood film version of this story called Alive. I prefer the Spanish Netflix film version of the same story known as Society Of The Snow which i feel capture the story even more powerful than the 1993 version. But if you really want to see more disturbing footage of cannibalism we have classics such as the 1980 horror film Cannibal Holocaust from director Ruggero Deodata. A true Italian horror cult film that´s well known for very brutal cannibal scenes and almost have a documentary film style in certain scenes. Lots of nudity, sexual rape scenes and body parts being ripped apart so this is definetely nothing for you if you are sensitive. I own a blu ray copy of this film with some very interesting special features, i believe i should have an older DVD copy as well lying somewhere in my movie collection. Cannibal horror films is something we don´t see often in the horror community. Not because people don´t want to watch these kinds of films, i think the director´s who dare to do films in this category know that this will be a challenge. Since there are many fans of films such as Cannibal Holocaust they know the fan base have certain expectations. So here we are with a cannibal horror film known as River Of Blood who i discovered thanks to movie review YouTube channel Geek Legion Of Doom. Being a fan of this genre of course i had to give this one a try. Is this horror film a must watch before Christmas arrives or is River Of Blood unfortunately a disappointment?
Four kayakers take a river adventure on vacation in Thailand with their own personal tour guide Nick ( Joseph Millson ) showing them the way. While they travel through the jungle they are warned about a local tribe that feed on human flesh, who have lived in this jungle for centuries.
If you for some reason were expecting something similar to Cannibal Holocaust i can tell you right away this is nothing like that film. I would probably call River Of Blood more like a traditional slasher film with 90´s vibes with cannibal influences included. It´s a very simple plot like the slasher horror films of the 90´s used to have, the biggest difference is that we do get to see some very gory scenes compared to ordinary slasher movies. There is especially one negative detail i kept thinking while watching River Of Blood but let´s get into the positive first. The cannibal tribe when we finally get to see them, it is actually fun seeing them attack visitors knowing they want to injure their prey to make them vulnerable and easier to kill. The practical effects regarding the flesh wounds looks alright for the most part and there are some brutal gory scenes. I have to say this film is shot beautiful on location in Thailand and you really get a feeling they used the jungle in a way that matches the story. When it comes to the characters we do have a little bit of a mixed bag here, but the most interesting character ( who we find out most details about ) is the jealous, selfish character Ajay, played by actor Louis James ( who i recognized from the vampire horror film Bogieville, worth checking out ). He is not really the kind of character you like because of his personality, but it becomes clear he have a survivor instinct and that is definetely needed in a jungle like this. I also like the performance of tour guide character Nick, played by actor Joseph Millson ( who fans of the Gerard Butler action film Angel Has Fallen might recognize ). Now, there is one detail i feel could have been done much better with this film. Considering this is supposed to be a cannibal horror film i feel that they should have been much more brutal in certain scenes. I don´t mean they have to show all details such as in Cannibal Holocaust, but if you are promoting this film to be a part of the human cannibal genre you probably should have used even more gory scenes. I think that could have helped this film to stand out from other jungle horror movies. Overall i will say though i did enjoy this film as a slasher horror film, just don´t have too high expectations regarding the cannibal scenes. Director Howard J. Ford directed the 2010 zombie film The Dead that i am a big fan of. I wouldn´t say River Of Blood is as good as that film but still entertaining enough if you feel like a throwback film to the 90´. Fresh meat anyone? Don´t mind if i do, let´s just hope it´s not someone i know boiling on the fire.

28 Years Later
We all would like to live in a world where we help each other, support each other and make a better society together. Unfortunately this is something that is very difficult to do as long as we have political violence, wars and racial hate across this beautiful world. Thankfully in my almost 26 years working in health care i have met people from all over the world who are trying to make a difference. Especially in war zones such as the Russia-Ukraine war where i personally know both nurses and doctors who travelled to Ukraine to help hospitals with patients who have been seriously hurt during the war. People like these are incredbly important to give families hope, a chance to heal and come back to ordinary life. But what if you woke up one day and find yourself one of the few remaining human beings in society, whiley you find out that the rest of the people are infected by a aggresive contagious virus? This is exactly what happened in the now known cult British horror film known as 28 Days Later from legendary director Danny Boyle. I remember the Swedish premiere week of this film in cinemas because there were massive posters everywhere, really promoting this film to be the next big cinema release. This was in February in 2003 and i even remember the cardboard popcorn buckets had 28 Days Later markers on them. I have read about this film for several months in movie magazines right before the release so i was very excited to see this film. It turned out to be better than i expected and it was without a doubt one of my personal favourite films of 2003. What made this film work so well was how this film was filmed almost to look like a documentary, which in my personal opinion made the horror scenes very effective. Really good acting performances from Cillan Murphy, Naome Harris and Brandon Gleeson. The infected people were really effective in their attack scenes and the atmosphere of the dead big cities worked really well and made a powerful impact. In 2007 we had a sequel released called 28 Weeks Later this time directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Not as effective as the original film but i enjoyed this film for what it was, a fast thrilling zombie horror film with a solid acting performances from actors Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner and Idris Elba. After many years of waiting it was announced that director Danny Boyle would return with a brand new film in the 20 Years franchise and here we are with the latest chapter 28 Years Later. Is this a worthy sequel to this franchise or is this not as good as fans was hoping it would be?
28 years have passed since the outbreak happened. There are no more ordinary cities or ordinary society that we used to have in the past. On the British Isles of Lindisfarne, the people are protected naturally by the path being flooded by the tide. Only at certain hours of the day they can cross to the main land until the tide comes back again. In this society lives scavenger James ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ), his son Spike ( Alfie Williams ) and his very sick wife Isla ( Jodie Corner ). Since there are no doctors in this community Spike wants to find one for his mother on main land, where he heard of one known as doctor Ian Kelson ( Ralph Fiennes ) to help her become healthy again. With the infected controlling the main land, this will make things more complicated with a seiously ill citizen.
I personally believe it is best to see the previous films 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later to understand the premise of this latest film in the 28 Days franchise. It has been a while since we saw a Danny Boyle zombie film and i can happily say that he still proves that he knows how to tell effective horror stories. What makes this film different from the previous films is that we finally get to see how society have changed trying to adjust itself against the infected. The community that lives on the island of Lindisfarne is an attempt to rebuild a society again where everyone helps, and i love the fact that the population is very supportive of each other. Considering society have changed so much since 28 Weeks Later i think this was a good idea to approach how humanity have moved on to adjust itself during these dark times. What else can you do? You have to be able to feel some kind of meaning in life, nothing will ever be the same again so having a community that works is clearly very important. The two main characters Jamie ( well played by Kraven The Hunter actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Spike ( Alfie Williams ) have a great father and son chemistry on screen and it is interesting to see their family arguments over Spike´s ill mother Isla ( played really well by actress Jodie Corner ( who i recognized from the 2021 historical drama The Last Duel ). There are some emotional scenes between mother Isla and her son Spike, where you see how vulnerable seriously ill people are when there is no hopital to get help. The most interesting part of 28 Years Later comes later in the film when we get to meet the odd doctor Ian Kelson ( played really good by actor Ralph Fiennes ). He have managed to surivie out in the mainlands in a very unique way. The impressive skeleton head monumental where Dr Ian lives is quite unique and gives a deeper meaning to what he was trying to achieve with this location. I think this skeleton monumental gives a deeper meaning to this film how we honor the dead ones that are no longer with us. I would say he is the most fascinating character of this film. The horror scenes in general works well with the infected but is this as strong as the original film 28 Days Later? Unfortunately not, but i still feel this is a well made horror film and tell a fascinating story about survival and how to honor your family. Director Danny Boyle still knows how to make quality cinema films and 28 Years Later is definetly worth a watch. Already looking forward to the sequel coming in January next year.
