The Dark, Sad Life Of Boogie2988

Anyone who knows me really well knows i have never been a big fan of YouTube creators. At least not the ones who try and make content to make money of out making videos of food tasting, if they lie on the beach in a bikini or if they tell you about how crazy their night out was with friends. Everyone have the right to do whatever they want, so i don´t have any personal problems against anyone who does YouTube for a living. I would not watch their content personally though since i am not interested in their content. The ones i follow on YouTube and look at every week is people like Geek Legion Of Doom, a British YouTube channel with Leo who reviews a lot of B movies, horror movies and action movies in general. He doesn´t ask anyone for money he just love to review films because that´s a passion of his. He have been around for many years and i think i have watched him since 2016 if i remember correctly ( at least that´s when i discovered him and he have been around many years before that ). If you are interested in especially independent horror films then this is a really good YouTube channel to find out if there are any interesting films worth a watch. I remember especially one review he did of the 2021 British horror film Bram Stoker´s Van Helsing, he had some interesting things to say in his review so check it out on his channel Geek Legion Of Doom. Even though i don´t look at YouTubers in general i remember several years ago before the pandemic i was watching different Christmas videos, not looking for anything specific. And one Christmas video from a YouTuber called Boogie2988 came up where he apparently played a character called Francis hating Christmas. This was the first time i was introduced to his YouTube channel so i remember looking around the channel. Mostly gaming content which wasn´t my thing really. So a couple of weeks ago i saw that Boogie2988 stars in a new documentary film about his life. Not knowing anything really about his background story i decided to give this documentary film a chance. Is this a documentary film everyone should see or should you avoid this one and go play Digmon World Data Squad on Playstation 2 instead?

For many years YouTube creator Boogie2988 ( also known as Steven Williams ) was very popular among gaming fans, being one of the first original YouTube stars. But from 2019 he noticed how he was beginning to loose viewers which means less money for him to live his lifestyle of gaming products and prostitutes. Hear his own words on what happened and how his health issues have impacted him over these years, if he will ever be able to make a comeback to make money by doing content on YouTube, or will he be forced to get an ordinary job?

I get it, Boogie2988 have had a long time of health issues and that´s a very serious issue in this documentary film. But i can´t honestly feel sorry for him in all the choices he have made while he made a lot of money. He bought video games, video games figures, toys, magic cards, technical expensive stuff and even prostitutes with money he have made from YouTube while he have a house to pay for and medical bills as well. I know that depression can make you make bad decisions, so i am not saying there is no reason behind this. But when you find out how much money he actually spent on prostitutes while having issues paying for his house, you understand how he couldn´t handle money at all. He should have had someone take care of his money helping him to pay his bills, because clearly he can´t handle his money addiction to buy more stuff. You can basically say he is almost like a hoarder, but not on the extreme level as we have seen on TV. I understand that this documentary is supposed to make me feel sad for this man, and the saddest part is actually that he never really tried anything else than being a YouTuber. Imagine if he would find a job where he felt welcome and loved, having working collegues who appreciated him at work and he might have had more self confidence. A working place where he could have gotten respect and learned a lot of new skills and perhaps even educated himself. Sitting at home talking about video games on YouTube living on other people´s hard earned money while he wants more money from his subscribers, to me that´s a big red signal right there. I am not saying he can´t love playing video games, you can do that at any age. But in real life you have to work to get your paycheck, get up in the morning no matter if you take a car to work, a bus, a train, as long as you do some kind of work. I am not saying that to be mean towards Boogie2988 but he could have made a better decision a long time ago that actually could have changed his life. Ok so he does have a lot of weight issues and that takes time to change, i completely understand that. But i also feel that this is also something he could have worked more on as well. So how does the portrait of Boogie2988 come of in this documentary film? Let´s just say it doesn´t give me an image of a man i feel very sorry for, simply because of his mentality and how he approach things in life. For example how he tries to talk at a job agency and bring up porn films as previous work experience ( which of course is just silly ). Also when he talks about how he want Tesla to sponsor him a car or his fans pay him for a car, why would anyone do that becuase he is a YouTuber? How he use psychadelic drugs instead of dealing with his bills? The most powerful part of this documentary is to hear his 20 years old girlfriend tell us about her tragic childhood and her traumatic memories. This is where the documentary actually becomes really interesting because i truly feel sorry for her. It becomes clear she´s not feeling well mentally and to live with a man almost 30 years older than her with all his health problems as well as mental issues, this is not a good combination. I understand as they say love is love, but something feels wrong in this relationship. Director Mike Clum have directed a well made documentary that´s especially interesting from a psychological perspective on how social media may cause more damage than do good if you don´t do it in a positive way. I wish Boogie2988 all the best of luck and hopefully he can make some changes, but this documentary does not make me feel sorry for all the choices he made when i know he could have done more to change his life. Still, an interesting documentary film worth a watch.
